According the Bridal Association of America, the average couple spends $1,970 on flowers for their wedding. Now, keep in mind that the average wedding costs more than $27,000. Yeah, so my flower budget is about $50.
I love flowers, but I’m not great at arranging them - at least not like my mom who really has an eye for it. Nonetheless, when my friend Jaimie got married last year, I put together some arrangements for her. Her florist was delivering flowers to the church, but she wanted to have some family pictures and pictures with her bridesmaids at the Jefferson Memorial.
So the day before her wedding, the matron of honor and I headed over to Costco to p
ick up some pink and white roses, along with a myriad of random white flowers. The morning of the wedding, we put together a large bouquet for Jaimie and four smaller bouquets for the girls. All the flowers were hand-wrapped with white or silver satin ribbon tied in pretty bows. Jaimie’s bouquet had a base of lovely white flowers with pale pink roses, the bridesmaids had simple nosegays of pale pink roses and the maid and matron of honor had nosegays of pink and white roses. The final effect can be seen in this picture of Jaimie’s flowers and mine.

So, I’m on board for my own wedding, too. Now Jaimie got married in a metropolitan area the last weekend of June so there were TONS of beautiful fresh flowers to choose from. My wedding is going to be much earlier in the season and in a small town (no Costco!). I’ll be a little more limited when it comes to the selection and it’s impossible to plan very far in advance. I do know, however, what’s in season then.
Tulips will be very easy to get, but they are delicate and could be impacted by hot or cold weather. Peonies should be in season and they smell great. Also, I might be able to find some early hydrangea since those are popular for Mother’s Day which is the next weekend.
Here are some ideas of what I’d like:
